| What We’re Drinking Now | |||
| White | |||
| 2007 | Tenterden Bacchus Reserve, Chapel Down, Kent, UK | £34 | |
| From the first scent of elderflower, this wine is fresh and appetising. Bacchus is the star turn of white English grape varieties and this one is dry, flavoursome and stylish. | |||
| 2006 | Poggio al Tesoro, Vermentino, Tyrrhenian Coast | £35 | |
| There is no blending with other grapes nor wood ageing to interfere with the pure flavours of Vermentino, allowing its delicate aromas of acacia flowers, apricot and banana to shine through. | |||
| 2006 | Les Crètes, Petite Arvine, Vallé D’Aoste | £39 | |
| North Western Italy’s Valle D’Aosta is home to Europe’s most elevated vineyards and is Italy’s smallest winemaking region. This intense and uniquely flavourful wine has pleasantly fresh scents of apple, grapefruit, pear and a hint of jasmine. | |||
| 2005 | Journey’s End, Chardonnay, Stellenbosch, South Africa | £40 | |
| Ripe and juicy on the nose with citrus and tropical aromas. The palate follows this up with more crisp lemony fruit and some peachy flavours too, mixed with a toasty, creamy edge from the oak barrels. | |||
| Red | |||
| 2004 | Le Ciste, Côtes du Roussillon, Eric Laguerre | £28 | |
| This red is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Carignan and after spending time in oak it has produced a deep red coloured wine with aromas of dark berry fruit. Powerful but with great balance this is a wine to savour through to the long enjoyable finish. | |||
| 2006 | Burgenland Zweigelt, Heinrich, Gols, Austria | £34 | |
| An enticing aroma of pure raspberry marks this light-bodied, intense red. It picks up hints of black pepper and tobacco, remaining balanced and focused through the moderate finish | |||
| 2002 | Arbois Trousseau, Cuvée des Geologues, Caveau de Bacchus | £41 | |
| Jura is one of the most individual and traditional wine regions of France. With hints of strawberry and apple, this wine shows fine tannin and a good structure. | |||
| 1999 | Valpolicella Superiore, Marion & Stefano Campedelli | £44 | |
| Ruby red in colour with a hint of violet, the bouquet recalls small woodland fruits, cherries, perennial herbs with a hint of spice. A soft, round palate and a complex, persistent taste from this small, family owned vineyard. | |||
| 2003 | Le Cigare Volant, Santa Cruz, Bonny Doon, California | £51 | |
| A blend of grenache, syrah, mourvèdre, viognier, cinsault and carignan in the Rhône Valley style of Chateauneuf du Pape. The name of the wine (translated literally as Flying cigar or “saucer”) pokes fun at the Rhône winemakers, who in 1954, passed a law to prevent Flying Saucers from flying over or landing near their vineyards. Furthermore, the penalty for breaking this law requires that any Flying Saucers be impounded! Makes sense to us. You? | |||
